Raphaël Sévère : Récital de musique française
Chausson - Debussy - Pierné - Poulenc - Saint-Saëns
Over the long period spanning the oldest work in this concert (Andante and Allegro by Chausson, 1881) and the most recent (Sonata by Poulenc, 1962), the French School has been characterized by a great diversity of trends and musical idioms. However the pieces included in this selection share some traits which justify their presence here.
They are written by composers who used the lyricism of the clarinet to the full; these pages are imbued with fine colours and contrats.
Poulenc alternates laughter with melancholy, Saint-Saëns virtuosity with poetry. Chausson marries softness and passion, Debussy dream and fantasy. During the concert atmospheres intermingle and inspire all sorts of characters, some of whom quite unexpected although consistently genuine in their roles and feelings.
