In this frenzy of invention, of at times
surprising harmonies, in this limitless
creativity that impresses upon the music
lover’s ear a ‘new’ Mozart, it would be
mistaken to consider these fantasies
as a mere laboratory of musical form:
before him, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach had
encountered in the fantasy the form most
conducive to expressing his unbounded
creativity. Thus it is thanks to this form as well that Mozart is not just a revolutionary but that he takes his rightful place within a history of music, with his models, his inspirations: if the subject in question be one of model, the place to look is doubtless in the direction of Carl Philipp.
