‘As a painter uses shadows in order to enhance daylight and brightness, so do we mix dissonances and consonances […] to enhance the mellowness of the latter’, writes Jehan Titelouze in the foreword to his 1623 book of hymn settings Hymnes de l’Eglise pour toucher sur l’orgue (Ballard).
Invention and variety characterize the art of dissonance and ornamentation in French Baroque music. Each composer has his or her vocabulary of ornament, which gives the music its particular, unmistakable flavor. And it is amazing to see how such variety announces the music of our time.
The art of dissonance and ornamentation is the common denominator of this programme. As it maps out French influence on 17th and 18th century European music, it also highlights stylistic or thematic affinities between compositions of manifold origins... with sometimes unexpected results!
