Sergio Torices Roldán
Txistu
Sergio Torices Roldán (born in Pamplona) is a virtuoso txistu player, interested in traditional repertoire, transcriptions of Baroque compositions (such as works for piccolo) and contemporary music. He graduated from the ‘Juán Crisóstomo de Arriaga’ conservatoire in Bilbao. A member of Silboberri Txistuzale Elkartea, a Basque cultural association that promotes txistu music, he has premiered several contemporary works by J. Ituarte, H. Extremiana, S. Salaberri, etc., either as a soloist or in bandas, both in the Vizcaya region and throughout the Basque Country. He teaches at ‘Bartolomé Ertzilla’ conservatoire in Durango ( Vizcaya), where he was appointed in 1999.
He sees a vital relation between contemporary music and the evolution of txistumaking. In this programme, Sergio Torices plays a prototype instrument with notably improved sound and tuning. The instrument was conceived by Bilbao conservatory txistu teacher Aitor Amilibia, who also teaches at the Musikene center for higher musical education in San Sebastián, in cooperation with his colleagues Iñaki Imatz, a skilled artisan and teacher of mechanics, and acoustics specialist Jesús Alonso (†).
