Cyrille Dubois
Ténor
Révélation Lyrique at the Victoires de la Musique Classique ceremony in 2015 (in the Operatic Revelation category), Cyrille Dubois is an artist eager to discover new repertory. He came to know singing during his childhood in the special-scheduling classes at the Maîtrise (Children’s Choir) of Caen (direction Robert Weddle). Thanks to weekly performances he became familiar with a broad sacred and secular repertory during those years. As a soloist he was able to participate in numerous projects, for instance the Pie Jesu movements of the Fauré, Duruflé, or Andrew Lloyd Weber Requiems, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms or Miles in by Britten at the operas of Lyon and Chambéry.
A few years later he entered as a tenor the Paris Conservatory (classe of Alain Buet). But Cyrille’s major passion remained with the lied and art song, for which he is a sought-after emissary.
After his years at the Paris Conservatory he entered the Atelier Lyrique of the Paris Opera, which afforded him his first opportunities to perform on stage Sam Kaplan in Street Scene by Kurt Weill, Gonzalve in Ravel’s L’Heure Espagnole, La Resurezzione by Handel (Saint John, direction Paul Agnew) and Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera (Il Contino Belfiore). Beyond the Atelier he was also able to interpret other roles such as Mozart’s Magic Flute (Tamino, – Man at Arms), Gianni Schicchi by Puccini (Rinuccio – Gherardo), Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia (Male Chorus), or Le Nozze di Figaro by Mozart (Don Curzio). The 21st international singing competition in Clermont-Ferrand gave him the possibility of singing the role of Edoardo in La Cambiale di Matrimonio by Rossini at numerous French venues. Thus he was able to encounter Jeannine Reiss, Dame Ann Murray and Nathalie Dessay on the occasion of master classes.
The beginnings of his career have already led him to the most significant halls in France and Europe: La Scala in Milan, in Paris Opera, in La Monnaie in Brussels, or at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées where he stepped in at the last minute as Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville by Rossini. He also sang his first Ferrando in Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte with Opéra Fuoco and Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos by Strauss with the Le Balcon ensemble at the Théâtre de l’Athénée. In 2014, he performed Gérald in Lakmé at the Opéra Théâtre of Saint-Étienne, which caused him to be considered one of the most promising figures in French singing (awarded the Révélation Lyrique 2014 by the Union of Music Critics). He was also noted in the four valets of Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Lyon Opera, and he also revived the role of Brighella (Paris Opera) coupled with that of the Tanzmeister at the Toulon Opera, making his debut at Garnier (Paris Opera) with the role of Oronte in Handel’s Alcina conducted by Christophe Rousset. Last season he was selected by the Centre Français de Promotion Lyrique to interpret the young premier (Coelio) in Les Caprices de Marianne by Henri Sauguet in numerous halls in the provinces; he was also Pâris alongside Karine Deshayes at the Toulon Opera (Offenbach, La Belle Hélène), then participated in the premier at the Paris Opera of Le Roi Arthus by Chausson (with Roberto Alagna, Thomas Hampson). He also made his debut as Gonzalve (Ravel, L’Heure Espagnole) at the Glyndebourne Festival (GB). He was further invited to participate in the television programme La Boîte à Musique by Jean-François Zygel on France 2.
But faithful to the amateur and choral milieu in which he grew up (in the small seaside town Ouistreham Riva-Bella) he never forgets to pass on his passion, as often as he can, in the Manche département where he now resides.
On disc, aside from the recordings he made as a child with the Maîtrise de Caen (particularly the petits motets of Brossard, acclaimed internationally by the critics), he was the guest of Radio France for the recording of Tistou les Pouces verts by Sauguet, and of the Center for Baroque Music in Versailles for Renaud by Sacchini with Les Talens Lyriques, and La Caravane du Caire (Grétry) with Les Agrémens, Le Paradis Perdu by Théodore Dubois and the Missa Sacra with Les Cris de Paris (direction Geoffroy Jourdain), Le Désert by Félicien David with Accentus (direction Laurence Equilbey), and works written by Paul Dukas for the Prix de Rome with the Orchestra of the Belgian Radio avec l’orchestre de la radio Belge (direction Hervé Niquet – to be released).
Among his projects: Don Narcison (Turco in Italia, Rossini) at Metz; Marzio (Mitridate, Mozart) at the Théâtre des Champs Élysées and in Dijon; Belmonte (Entführung aus dem Serail, Mozart) at the Lyon Opera; and Les Illuminations de Rimbaud by Britten with the Orchestre de Normandie. He was furthermore patron of the European Opera Day at the Theatre of Caen in May 2015…
